Name that chain—Which of these chain links do you have?

Cuban chain

I love to write about jewels, but I also love the simplicity of a beautiful gold chain. Did you know that every jewelry chain link has a name and a particular pattern? There are hundreds and I’m highlighting a few of the most popular here (with thanks to BigBeadLittleBead.com).

Things to think about when you’re buying a chain

  • Some gold chains are made hollow—they’re less expensive, but can break more easily than a solid chain.
  • The purer the gold, the softer the chain will be (due to added, non-gold alloys). Consider a 14K chain for more durability.
  • If you’re allergic to nickel, opt for 14K or 18K (less alloy in the gold).
  • A flat jewelry chain link, like the omega and herringbone, is more likely to twist.
  • A round chain, like a snake chain, can catch on clothing.
  • For a good all-around sturdy chain, consider the box, wheat, or anchor chain.

Now it’s time to…NAME THAT CHAIN!
