Diamonds are an April birthday girl’s best friend

With the diamond as April’s birthstone, if you’re lucky enough to have a birthday this month, you’ve hit the gemstone jackpot! It’s the world’s hardest natural material, the subject of poems, songs, and dreams, and the recognized “king of gems.”

If you’re buying a diamond: the 4 C’s

In previous blogs, we’ve discussed Carat, Clarity, and Color. Along with Cut, these are the Four C’s of Diamonds. Your diamond’s combination of 4 C’s doesn’t change, and the quality of these four categories will determine the value of the stone you’re buying.

Taking care of your diamond ring

  • Keep it solid—Check the setting and prongs to make sure they’re tight.
  • Keep it clean—Use a soft cloth to clean away oils and soap.
  • Keep it safe—Be careful if you’re swimming with your ring…your fingers could get cold, causing your ring could slip off. And if you take off your ring to wash your hands at home, don’t put it near the sink, where it can fall down the drain.

Did you know…

  • No two diamonds are alike (like snowflakes).
  • One can only be scratched by another diamond.
  • The Romans thought diamonds were splinters from falling stars, while the Greeks regarded the sparkling gems as tears of the gods.
  • More than 250 tons of ore need to be blasted, crushed, and processed to yield just one carat of rough diamond—and only 20 percent of all rough diamonds are suitable for gem cutting.
  • Most diamonds found in nature are between one to three billion years old.
  • The Cullinan Diamond is the largest stone ever found—3106 carats (1.33 pounds).

Healing properties of the diamond

The diamond is believed to enhance creativity, imagination, and ingenuity—and it encourages psychic development and clairvoyance.
