Good luck charms from around the world

  1. 4-leaf clover (Ireland): One estimate has it that there are approximately 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every four-leaf clover. Irish tradition has it that the leaves represent faith, hope, love, and luck for the finder.
  2. Cornicello/horn (Italy): The little horn wards off the evil eye (“malocchio”), jealousy, and envy, and protects romantic relationships.
  3. Elephant (Asia): The largest land animals are thought to bring the wearer dignity, goodness, strength, loyalty, and longevity.
  4. Hamsa/hand (Middle East): A very popular good luck charm in many cultures is the hamsa, or hand, which wards off the evil eye. It also protects the wearer from curses and brings them strength and blessings.
  5. Horseshoe (US): Make sure the open edge faces up! One legend says that mischievous fairies couldn’t stand the touch of metal so they shied away from houses that had a horseshoe on it.
  6. Nazar/Eye/blue bead (Turkey): Protects the wearer from the evil eye—including curses and evil looks from strangers.
  7. Scarab (Egypt): The scarab (beetle) is believed to protect the wearer, as a symbol of life and transformation.

Is your favorite gemstone lucky?

8. Gemstones (worldwide): Our trusty source, the GIA, states: “Gems have often symbolized power and positivity… a shield of protection that wards off troubles and brings happiness.” These gemstones inspire the wearers to be confident, positive, and have hope.

  • Peridots: Attract abundance and good luck
  • Rubies: Radiate good luck
  • Emeralds: Protect against evil spells (right, Dorothy?)
  • Sapphires: Protect against envy and harm
  • Jade: Take on evil, while promoting a clear mind
  • Gems with a “cat’s eye”: Protect against evil spirits
