Good luck charms

With St. Patrick’s Day around the corner, it’s time to talk about good luck. Whether you believe in lucky charms or not, it’s fun to show your favorites to the world in your favorite pendant, bracelet, or pin. Here are some of the more popular good luck symbols I’ve found.

Which of these symbols says “good luck” to you?

four-leaf clover
  • Four-leaf clover: In Irish tradition, the wearer is destined to have good luck.
  • Wishbone: The unbroken wishbone brings the promise of good luck, a tradition that began with the early Romans, who brought it to Europe.
  • Horseshoe: An Irish folktale told that the devil, given a burning hot horseshoe, swore he’d never go near one again. Wearing one upside down means you’ll collect good luck; but, wearing it with the opening down can mean that good luck flows out to all.
  • Hamsa, or “hand”: This popular Middle East/Mediterranean good luck charm signifies protection against the evil eye and other spirits.
  • Italian horn: The Italian cornetto (“little horn”) wards off the evil eye (“malocchio”) and bad luck in general.
  • Eye: Almost every civilization believes the “evil eye” can bring misfortune. An antidote (especially in the Mediterranean and Middle East) is an eye-shaped amulet.
  • Elephant: This comes from Hindu tradition, where Ganesha (in elephant form) is the god of luck, fortune, and protection. Many believe that having one with the trunk up helps good luck.

Gemstones and crystals

There are lots of “lucky” stones—in fact, most crystals have a tradition of some kind of luck or healing tied to them. Here are just a few:

  • Amethyst: Helps creative success
  • Aventurine: Brings luck when you’re taking a chance on something
  • Citrine: Invites abundance
  • Jade: Turns around bad luck
  • Rose quartz: Helps with romance and broken hearts

There are many more lucky charms than we’ve highlighted here—including hearts, doves, feathers, arrows, oms, and ladybugs. But whatever makes you feel lucky, be sure to include it in your jewelry, so you can wear your luck near you every day.
