Traveling with Your Jewelry: Some Important Do’s and Don’ts

Travelling

This is the time for vacations—maybe an overseas tour, a trip to the shore or mountains, or a cruise. When you’re packing up for your travels, think twice before taking your valuable jewelry.

These do’s and don’ts can help you minimize the “oopsies” that turn happy memories to unpleasant reminders.

DO

  • Keep your jewels in your hotel safe while you’re not wearing them.
  • Consider buying some chic costume jewelry for while you’re away—in fact, travel with jewelry that you don’t mind losing.
  • Think about leaving your glitzy engagement ring/wedding band set at home and buying a plain band—just for the trip.
  • Ask yourself this question if you really want to wear your best jewelry: “How hard will it be to replace this?”

DON’T

  • Take your precious jewelry with you unless you really need to. Why invite trouble?
  • Wear your jewels walking through foreign streets; ask your tour guide or hotel concierge what they’d recommend.
  • Take your rings off to wash your hands. It’s that much easier to either forget them at a rest stop or knock them down a drain.
  • Take your jewelry with you if it’s not protected by an updated appraisal and replacement insurance.

Packing tips

Consider a soft jewelry roll to keep everything in order. If you don’t have one, here are some helpful packing ideas:

  • Necklaces: Get a straw and thread the necklace through it. Fasten the clasp and voila—no tangles.
  • Rings: Consider small snack size plastic bags for each ring, so they don’t scratch one another.
  • Bracelets: Roll up a washcloth and fasten your bracelets around them.
  • Small earrings can fit into the sections of a travel pill box.
