“Fall” In Love With These Autumn Gemstones: Earth-Tone Jewelry

Just as you change wardrobes each season, how about changing your jewelry too? Get back to nature this fall with earth-tone jewelry: gold, yellow, burnt orange, and deep bronze and red. Here are some perfect gemstones that reflect fall’s vibrant colors.

Gold/orange

citrine pendant
citrine
  • Citrine: This quartz-based gem comes in transparent delicate yellow to orange to an earthy brownish orange. The most popular yellow stone for jewelry, it’s durable and affordable. It’s also one of November’s birthstones.
  • Amber: The GIA calls amber “nature’s time capsule.” This golden gem is organic, rather than mineral—tree resin that’s fossilized and can contain embedded insects, leaves, or other materials trapped millions of years ago. Did you know that when you rub it, amber gives off a pleasant odor?
  • Yellow topaz: Topaz comes in a variety of colors, including yellow and orange. According to the GIA, in India it’s traditionally been believed to assure long life, beauty, and intelligence. This is one of November’s birthstones.

Red/reddish-brown

Hessionite garnet
  • Hessionite garnet: This version of the garnet comes in warm reddish brown/orange and orange/yellow tones. According to the Intern’l Gem Society, it’s also known as the “cinnamon stone.” Hessionite garnets have risen in popularity, since they’re relatively inexpensive and possess a beautiful earth tone jewel.
  • Carnelian: This semi-precious gemstone is found in orange to brownish-red tones. It is said to enhance motivation, endurance, and creativity.
  • Sunstone: This lesser-known gemstone comes from the same family as moonstone; but unlike it, this gem has a translucent base color of brownish red to yellow-orange and features a sparkly metallic luster (sometimes copper) that makes the stone pop.

Combinations

Ametrine
  • Ametrine: This very cool gem is a naturally occurring combination of amethyst (purple) and citrine (warm gold/orange) that occurs in a transparent base. The only know source of this stone is in Brazil.
  • Fire opals: No two opals are alike. Fire opals have a body color of brown, yellow, orange or red. There’s not as much “play-of-color” but the depth of color is entrancing.

As the GIA says, “Nature gives us a brilliant palette of color-changing leaves….a treasure trove of gemstones in rich earth tones is ripe for collecting.” Happy autumn!

Brilliantly yours, Aimee
