August’s birthstone: The peridot, gift of the volcanoes
August is the only month to actually have three birthstones: the peridot, spinel, and sardonyx (known for its use in cameos). But for fresh green sparkle, nothing can top the peridot, which ranges from bright green to green-yellow. It’s also the stone for a 16th anniversary.
Formed in volcanoes
This gemstone was formed early in the Earth’s creation from intense heat, and ejected with lava from volcanoes. The magma, which cooled particularly slowly, created large and clear specimens especially in Myanmar (Burma) and Egypt (where it’s the national gem). In the US, Arizona is a significant source of the gemstone.
Did you know?
- Some peridots actually arrive on earth in a certain type of meteor (though these aren’t usually gem-quality).
- It’s been mistaken through the centuries for emerald or topaz, and in medieval times, was used in many church artifacts, such as goblets.
- It gets its name from the Arabic faridat, meaning gem.
- Traditional healing properties associated with the gem include help for digestive, heart, lung and eye problems, and a solution for insomnia.
How to buy peridots
- Look for grass-green colors without brown or strong yellow overtones.
- Stones should be free from visible inclusions.
- Smaller stones can be just as beautiful as larger ones—and more reasonably priced.
Taking care of your peridot jewelry
With a Mohs rating of 6.5-7, a peridot is softer than other gemstones. That means that it does better as a pendant or in earrings. Everyday wear isn’t a good idea, since even acidic perspiration can wear it out.
According the GIA, the stone can be damaged by thermal shock, so don’t use a steam or ultrasonic cleaner. Use a soft-bristle brush with mild dish soap in warm water. And store your peridot jewelry away from other gemstones that could scratch it.
Enjoy the bright days of August with your bright green peridot jewelry. And when you need an appraisal of your peridot and other precious jewelry, silver, watches, and other valuables, call me to book an appointment at 617-304-0174.
Brilliantly yours, Aimee
