How do I keep my diamond jewelry safe and sparkling? Answers to your questions
The diamond is the hardest substance on earth—and one of the most beautiful. If you’re lucky enough to have a diamond ring, earrings, or brooch, here are answers to some questions I’m often asked about how to keep them safe and sparkling.
Can I wear my diamond earrings in the shower?
Better not…shower gels, lotions, and soaps can dull their luster. And when you take your earrings off, don’t leave them on the side of the sink—if you do, have the number of a friendly plumber on hand, just in case. J
How can I clean my diamond jewelry?
Put a few drops of mild dish soap in a bowl of warm water. Use a soft, clean toothbrush, cloth, or cotton swab to wash off oils and dirt. Then dry carefully. You can do this every week without harming the stones.
Does handling my diamonds harm them?
It won’t harm them, but the oils from your fingers may dull the stones’ brilliance. So look, but don’t touch.
I have an antique diamond ring. Anything special about cleaning it?
The GIA has the answer. “Fragile settings, like older prongs in antique jewelry, shouldn’t be vigorously scrubbed, so be gentle with the toothbrush. Then, just rinse your diamond jewelry with water and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.”
Can my diamond break?
It may be the hardest substance around, but it is possible for a diamond to chip, especially if its has corners (as opposed to a round cut). The GIA recommends that “vulnerable points or corners are better protected with bezels, partial bezels, or V-shaped prongs.”
Do I really have to bring my ring to a jeweler every year?
Yes, and for a specific reason. If the prongs holding your diamond are bent or broken, the stone can get loose and either chip or actually fall out. Even one damaged prong can put your ring in danger.
Can my diamond get scratched?
Yes—by another diamond! When you’re not wearing them, protect your jewels by storing them in different compartments so they won’t rub up against one another.
Is it true I shouldn’t wear my diamond at the beach?
Think twice about it: 1) Cold water can make your finger shrink, which can lead to a ring falling off; and 2) rough water can make your ring swim off into the deep.
