Get an Insurance Replacement Appraisal for Your Jewelry
Replacing lost, damaged, or stolen jewelry can be difficult. Often items have sentimental value beyond just the monetary value. Although an insurance replacement appraisal cannot replace the sentimental value of a lost item, an appraisal is important to ensure you are paid the monetary value of your jewelry.
It is a good idea to take your jewelry to an independent appraiser instead of a jeweler because you are more likely to get an accurate estimate of your jewelry’s value. An independent appraiser does not feel the need to make you a happy customer by overvaluing your earrings, watches, and necklaces. Instead, you should get an accurate view of your jewelry’s value, whether that is higher or lower than you expected.
Whether you decide to go to an independent appraiser or a jewelry store for the appraisal of your valuable, the very process of having your items appraised is important. Without an accurate appraisal, insurance companies would have a hard time replacing your items. With an appraisal, you are provided with paperwork accurately describing your items including coloring and the size of the stones. This will help to ensure your replacement item or items are on par with the lost, damaged, or stolen ones. That way you will not get subpar replacement jewelry.
It is also important to keep your appraisal up-to-date. The value of your items can fluctuate over time depending upon the market value of your items. When you get an insurance appraisal, it deals specifically with the value of your item or items at that time. It does not tell you how much your items will be worth five or ten years from now. You should get a regular appraisal at least every three to five years. Even if the store where you got your items already gave you an appraisal, it is a good idea to take your items to an independent appraiser to get a more accurate view of the value of your items.
