Exploring Garnets: the January Birthstone

th-6If New Year’s ushers in your birth month, then your beautiful birthstone is the garnet.

You probably think of the garnet as a deep, rich red, but the stone actually comes in a variety of colors including yellow, bright green, and even blue (the rarest). But red is the most common, even leading to its name, which referred its resemblance to a pomegranate seed. Garnets are documented all the way back to the Egyptians. They traditionally represented friendship and trust — and were believed to inspire love and sensuality(!). Lucky January birthday boys and girls.

Garnets, which are not enhanced artificially, are a versatile stone. They can be cut in almost any shape and are found in necklaces, rings, earrings, and other ornaments.

Taking Care of Your Garnets

Garnets are tough and generally durable. As with other stones, it’s important to keep them from hard blows, which could lead to damage. And cleaning is as simple as warm, soapy water and a soft cloth.

So, January babies, stay warm this month and enjoy the warmth of your beautiful red garnets.

As always, if I can help you with anything, let me know!

Brilliantly yours, Aimee
