What Is Diamond Cut?

what is diamond cut by AMB AppraisalWhat a diamond does, better than any other substance, is to flash light back to your eye. When a diamond is cut well, the result is the brightness and flashes and sparkling that make us love diamonds.

The key to all this light dancing in and around your diamond is the cut and arrangement of facets, or tiny, flat polished surfaces. The best cuts will give your diamond as many facets for light to strike as possible. Like color and clarity and weight, a diamond’s cut doesn’t change.

Ninety percent of diamonds are round cut. “Fancy cuts,” with their own beauty, include styles like marquise, princess, pear, oval, heart, and emerald. Regardless of its style of cut, a diamond’s cut grade is really about how well a diamond’s facets interact with light.

The GIA has established standards for three factors in diamond cut. This enables your appraiser to evaluate how successfully a diamond interacts with light to create desirable visual effects such as:

  • Brightness: Internal and external white light reflected from a diamond
  • Fire: The scattering of white light into all the colors of the rainbow
  • Scintillation: The amount of sparkle a diamond produces, and the pattern of light and dark areas caused by reflections within the diamond.

I’d say that’s true of any company, Brook. Not eveyrone fits everywhere, and that’s okay from both sides. I, as you can imagine, am a big proponent of the importance of culture. Yes, it needs to be flexible enough to allow for the differences in all of us (and the benefits those differences can bring), but an employee is completely out of sync with the culture of the company, it’s unlikely that person will ever be happy there. Again, that’s okay. It’s all about the right fit.
